This pattern requires knowledge of crocheting over pipe cleaner to incorporate it into the wing.  Also requires knitting I-cords using double pointed needles [DPNs] for the tail, if you don’t have DPNs or don’t know how to knit I-cords, you can substitute the I-cord with crocheting around pipe cleaners.

HOW TO READ THIS PATTERN

#: Indicates the number of times to perform a certain stitch. If no number is shown, then just do it once.
Example: SC3 = SC in each of the next 3 stitches, Ch6 = Chain 6 times. SL = slip stitch once.
[ ] x #: Stitches in [ ] are to be performed and repeated the number of times indicated by #.
Example: [SC1, SC inc] x 2 = you will do SC1, SC inc, SC 1, SC inc. SC dec x 4 = you will do the decrease 4 times.
[ ]: Indicates end result stitches for that round.
Around: Do the specified stitches all the way around the current round.
Example: [SC, SC inc] around = you will do SC and SC inc, repeat these 2 stitches to the end of round.

GAUGE

Not important, as long as your stitches are tight enough together that the Polyfil will not show through. If the stitches are too loose, try using a smaller size hook.

INSTRUCTIONS

BODY:
Ring SC6
Rnd 1: (SC inc) around [12]
Rnd 2: (SC1, SC inc) around [18]
Rnd 3: (SC2, SC inc) around [24]
Rnd 4: (SC3, SC inc) around [30]
Rnd 5-9 (5 Rnds): SC around [30]
Rnd 10: (SC5, SC dec) around [24]
Rnd 11: (SC2, SC dec) around [18]
Rnd 12: (SC1, SC dec) around [12]

Start stuffing with Polyfil.

Rnd 13: (SC dec) around [6]

Break yarn. Add more stuffing as needed and weave the tail yarn through the 6 sts to close the opening. Weave in end.

FEET (MAKE 4):
Ring SC6
Rnd 1: SC around [6]
SL1
Break yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing on to body.

HORNS (MAKE 2):
Ring SC4
Rnd 1: SC around [4]
Rnd 2: (SC1, SC inc) around [6]
SL1
Break yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing on to body

WINGS (MAKE 2):
Wings are worked back and forth, not in rounds. After turning, the next stitch always start at the 2nd stitch from hook. All stitches are crochet through front loop only, unless noted otherwise.

Start off with a long tail for attaching wing to body.

Ch 4, turn
Row 1: SC3, Ch1, turn
Row 2: SC3, Ch2, turn
Row 3: SC4, Ch1 turn
Row 4: SC3, SC1 through both loops, Ch4, turn
Row 5: SC3, HDC3, Ch1, turn (missing the last stitch at the end)
Row 6: SC2, SC1 through both loops, Ch5, turn
Row 7: SC4, HDC3, Ch1, turn
Row 8: SC2, SC1 through both loops, Ch6, turn
Row 9: SC4, HDC3, Ch1, turn (missing the last stitch at the end)
Row 10: SC2, SC1 through both loops, Ch7, turn
Row 11: SC4, HDC4, Ch1, turn (missing last stitch at the end)
Row 12: SC2, SC1 through both loops, Ch7, turn
Row 13: SC4, HDC3, DC dec

Do not turn, continuing on spine of wing. This part will the tricky since there are no obvious loops to go through, just space it out as much as you can. From this point on, crochet through both loops as much as possible.

Row 14: DC dec x 3, HDC3, SC4, SL last stitch, Ch1, turn

Use half a piece of pipe cleaner, or whatever your wing span is plus about an inch. Trim off excess fuzz on the pipe cleaner, otherwise the fuzz will show through your stitches. Bend back the tips so the wire is not poking out.

Row 15: Place pipe cleaner over the wing spine and crochet over it. SC 19, SL at feather tip.

Take care that the pipe cleaner is not poking out of the tip of the feather. Break yarn, and weave in end.

TAIL:
The tail is worked in the round, but will end up flat, then knitted in i-cord for the tube part. After turning, the next stitch always start at the 2nd stitch from hook.

Ring SC6
Rnd 1: (SC inc) around [12]
Rnd 2: (SC1, SC inc) around [18]
Rnd 3: SC2, SC inc, SC1, HDC1, HDC inc, HDC1, SC1, SC inc, SC1, Ch1, turn

Now we’ll work back and forth in short rows and then going back to finish the round.

Short row 1: SC4, Ch1, turn
Short row 2: SL2, HDC, Ch4, do not turn but continue working in the same direction, SL into the 2nd stitch from hook, SL1, SC1, 3SCinc

We’re finished with the short rows, the next stitch will go back on the original piece to continue with Rnd 4.

Rnd 4 (cont.): SC1, SC inc, SC1, HDC1, HDC inc, HDC1, SC1, SC inc

Do not break yarn, we’ll continue to knit the tube part of the tail.

There are several ways to do the tail, I-cord around a pipe cleaner, or SC around a pipe cleaner. Or you can omit the pipe cleaner all together but the tail won’t be poseable. I would be almost impossible to insert the pipe cleaner after you’re finished with the i-cord, what’s why we’re going to knit around it.

Take a piece of pipe cleaner and trim off the excess fuzz. Fold in half and lightly twist together. Or take 2 pieces of trimmed pipe cleaners and twist together, cut to length of the tail you want plus about ½”-1”.

I-Cord method:

Insert hook and yarn over in each of the next 2 stitches, 3 loops on hook. Transfer the 3 stitches to a set of #5 DPNs and start knitting the i-cord. After you started a couple of rounds, insert the pipe cleaner in the center of the i-cord, and knit around it till about 5” long, or you have about ½” to ¾” left on the pipe cleaner. Bind off and leave a long tail to sew to body.

Crochet method:
SC around the pipe cleaner to conceal it, until it is about 5” long, or you have about ½” to ¾” left on the pipe cleaner. Break yarn and leave a long tail to sew to body.
